The emergence of data-intensive science creates a demand for neuroscience educators worldwide to deliver better neuroinformatics education and training in order to raise a generation of modern neuroscientists with FAIR capabilities, awareness of the value of standards and best practices, knowledge in dealing with big datasets, and the ability to integrate knowledge over multiple scales and methods.

This course offers lectures on the origin and functional significance of certain electrophysiological signals in the brain, as well as a hands-on tutorial on how to simulate, statistically evaluate, and visualize such signals. Participants will learn the simulation of signals at different spatial scales, including single-cell (neuronal spiking) and global (EEG), and how these may serve as biomarkers in the evaluation of mental health data.
This course features tutorials on how to use Allen atlases and digital brain atlasing tools, including operational and user features of the Allen Mouse Brain Atlas, as well as the Allen Institute's 3D viewing tool, Brain Explorer®.
The Neurodata Without Borders: Neurophysiology project (NWB:N, https://www.nwb.org/) is an effort to standardize the description and storage of neurophysiology data and metadata. NWB enables data sharing and reuse and reduces the energy barrier to applying data analytics both within and across labs. Several laboratories, including the Allen Institute for Brain Science, have wholeheartedly adopted NWB.
In this course, you will learn how computational neuroscientists use mathematical models and computer simulations to study different plasticity phenomena in the brain. During the course, you will program your own neuron model, a so-called leaky-integrate-and-fire (LIF) neuron model, and simulate it with a computer. You will also learn how to add various neuronal properties and plasticity mechanisms to the model and study how they operate.

This course consists of a series of webinars organized by the International Neuroethics Society on various neuroethics topics.
A number of programming languages are ubiquitous in modern neuroscience and are key to the competence, freedom, and creativity necessary in neuroscience research. This course offers lectures on the fundamentals of data science and specific neuroinformatic tools used in the investigation of brain data. Attendees of this course will be learn about the programming languages Python, R, and MATLAB, as well as their associated packages and software environments.

Probing the organization of interactions within and across neuronal populations is a promising approach to understanding the principles of brain processing. The rapidly advancing technical capabilities to record from hundreds of neurons in parallel open up new possibilities to disentangle the correlative structure within neuronal networks. However, the complexity of these massive data streams calls for novel, tractable analysis tools that exploit the parallel aspect of the data.
The workshop will include interactive seminars given by selected experts in the field covering all aspects of (FAIR) small animal MRI data acquisition, analysis, and sharing. The seminars will be followed by hands-on training where participants will perform use case scenarios using software established by the organizers. This will include an introduction to the basics of using command line interfaces, Python installation, working with Docker/Singularity containers, Datalad/Git, and BIDS.
Neuroanatomy provides one of the unifying frameworks for neuroscience and thus it is not surprising that it provides the basis for many neuroinformatics tools and approaches. Regardless of whether one is working at the subcellular, cellular or gross anatomical level or whether one is modeling circuitry, molecular pathways or function, at some point, this work will include an anatomical reference.
This course, consisting of one lecture and two workshops, is presented by the Computational Genomics Lab at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health and University of Toronto. The lecture deals with single-cell and bulk level transciptomics, while the two hands-on workshops introduce users to transcriptomic data types (e.g., RNAseq) and how to perform analyses in specific use cases (e.g., cellular changes in major depression).
Since their introduction in 2016, the FAIR data principles have gained increasing recognition and adoption in global neuroscience. FAIR defines a set of high level principles and practices for making digital objects, including data, software and workflows, Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable. But FAIR is not a specification; it leaves many of the specifics up to individual scientific disciplines to define.
This couse is the opening module for the University of Toronto's Krembil Centre for Neuroinformatics' virtual learning series Solving Problems in Mental Health Using Multi-Scale Computational Neuroscience. Lessons in this course introduce participants to the study of brain disorders, starting from elemental units like genes and neurons, eventually building up to whole-brain modelling and global activity patterns.
In this course we present the TVB-EBRAINS integrated workflows that have been developed in the Human Brain Project in the third funding phase (“SGA2”) in the Co-Design Project 8 “The Virtual Brain”.
