About the Brain Awareness Week Brain Data Science Collection
The Brain Awareness Week Brain Data Science Collection was created to provide a general introduction to Brain Data Science and to introduce a selection of apps developed by the Brain Data Science Community to enable citizen scientists to contribute to neuroscience research regardless of their experience level.
What is Brain Data Science?
Brain Data Science, more formally known as Neuroinformatics, is the branch of neuroscience devoted to the development of technologies that enable neuroscientists to identify, analyze, model, organize, and share neuroscience data. Brain Data Science sits at the crossroads of computer science and neuroscience; and as such, it applies neuromorphic engineering, computational neuroscience, and ontologies to neuroscience databases to integrate, visualize, and quantify neuroscience research.
Why is Brain Data Science important?
Neuroscience is a multidisciplinary science that combines physiology, anatomy, molecular biology, developmental biology, cytology, computer science and mathematical modeling to understand the fundamental and emergent properties of neurons and neural circuits; so it is not surprising that neuroscience produces large volumes of data from multiple levels of the brain. Brain Data Science produces technologies that enable neuroscientists to integrate and analyze data from multiple levels of the brain produced by the subdisciplines of neuroscience to further our understanding of the nervous system. Specifically, clinicians and research scientists use the computational tools, mathematical models, and neuroinformatic databases produced by Brain Data Scientists to collaborate, share information, and quantitatively confirm working theories.
